Choosing the Best Home Exchange Site

Home exchange websites and discussion forums are popping up all over the internet these days. The world is becoming more comfortable with the idea of swapping homes with someone for a short amount of time, and this comfort shows in the number of new home swap websites appearing every day.

With all of these sites to choose from, how do you choose the one that is right for you and your situation? The only hard and fast rule is that you should go with a site that makes you comfortable. If you feel that the mission and vision of the site mesh with what you want and need from your home exchange experience, that's a pretty good indication that they will be pleasant to work with.

If the site you are considering does not charge any type of membership or exchange fees, this (believe it or not) could be a sign of trouble! A home exchange site that allows you to sign up, browse listings, and set up an exchange is bound to be fraught with no-shows and scammers. By requesting a fee from each member, these home exchange sites can tell that you are serious about swapping.

The site should be frequently updated. If there are offers on the site that expired a very long time ago — and especially if no new ones have replaced them — that might mean that the site is no longer active or that the administrators just can't be bothered to perform maintenance on the site. Either way, you probably don't want to exchange on a site like that.

Be aware of how the various sites protect your identity. Many home exchange sites require you to use an ID number or a user name in order to conceal your name. Other users are only allowed to contact you if they also have a paying membership at that site, which is a very good security measure.

The site that you choose should also have plenty of user support information as well as instructions on carrying out the home exchange process. Offering your home and arranging a swap can be confusing at first, so having help and instructions available can greatly increase your chances of having an excellent home exchange experience.

A good home exchange site should also give you access to listings all around the world. If you want to travel internationally but all of the site's listings are in your own country or one nearby, you won't be able to get the full home exchange experience. A decent home exchange database will allow you to choose the country you want to go to and browse through the listings in that country.

Once you have chosen the site that you want to use in arranging your home exchange, it's just a matter of singing up and going through the listings until you find something that you like. This experience is much less complicated than it might seem, and exchanging your home for another person's home will make your vacation unforgettable.
