In this arrangement, two homeowners trade homes for the duration of their holiday, usually 1 to 2 weeks. They each live in each other's homes and sometimes even drive each other's cars.

The greatest thing about home exchanges is that they are nearly free. Rather than spending $200 a night at a hotel, you travelers can stay in a house with all of the comforts of home for no charge. The only fee involved is the membership fee for the home exchange website.

This sounds like a perfect solution for those travelers who can't afford to spend a fortune on accommodations, but what kind of traveler does something like a home exchange?

The fastest growing population of home exchange enthusiasts is senior citizens. They typically have very flexible schedules and more free time on their hands. They usually do not have to worry about children or other family members, so they are free to travel whenever they want. They also do not have to wait for a kid-friendly home to be available on the home exchange market, so they are able to take nearly any home that strikes their fancy.

Since seniors are often on a fixed income, home exchange allows them to use their home almost as a free travel ticket. They have only to pay for transportation, activities, and food for their vacation — cutting out the expense of a hotel leaves more money for all of these things and can greatly improve the enjoyment factor of a vacation.

The home exchange market isn't dominated solely by seniors, however. A lot of young professionals have caught on to this idea and have embraced it as a way to get a different perspective on the places that they visit. Staying in a neighborhood and not a hotel allows travelers to experience their destination in an entirely different light.

Families have also found that home exchanges are just the solution for their vacation needs. Often, hotel rooms are too small and uncomfortable for a family with children. Many families just don't take vacations anymore since they can't comfortably stay in a hotel — this is especially true if the family has several kids. A home exchange in a kid-friendly house is the best way to make sure that there is enough room for a family to comfortably enjoy their time away from home.

With such a diverse group of people interested in home exchanges, it's no wonder that home exchange websites have been gaining in popularity so quickly. Trading your home and staying in the home of a stranger may seem like a weird concept at first, but it makes sense: you don't use your home while on vacation anyway, so why not use that to your advantage?
