Housing News for First-Time Home Buyers

This website is published exclusively for first-time home buyers, which makes it different from most real estate news websites. We only publish those news items that are most relevant and useful to home buyers. We also help you make sense of the news, by including definitions, explanations and other commentary.

Born from the Recession

This news and information website was launched in December 2009. It is a product of the housing collapse and the subsequent recession that wrecked our economy. The Home Buying Institute itself has been around several years longer than that, but this news blog was created in direct response to the recession.

Many of the problems associated with the subprime, mortgage and housing crises could have been prevented, if home buyers had access to honest and objective information. Instead, nearly everyone was swept up in the housing boom, including our government leaders. There was tremendous pressure and incentive to sell homes and mortgages, so credit risks were downplayed and quality information was scarce. That is why we created this resource — to fill a void.

We provide accurate and unbiased information for first-time home buyers. We do not run any advertisements on this news website (a rarity these days), nor do we try to sell anything. This website has one singular purpose, and that’s to create a smarter class of future home buyers.

About the Authors

This website is published by Cornett Communications, a real estate publishing company.

Occasionally, we allow guest authors to publish articles on the site. We also have a writing program that allows journalism students to get real-world experience. Guest articles will always be clearly labeled with the author’s name. We are an independent news source not tied to any housing organization.

We occasionally publish news releases from the following organizations:

  • The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA)
  • Freddie Mac
  • National Association of Realtors (NAR)
  • National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)
  • Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
  • The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA)
  • And other sources that are relevant to home buyers

Our Research and Publishing Process

As mentioned above, we only publish real estate news that is useful for first-time home buyers. To accomplish this, we monitor a wide variety of news and data sources, selecting the most relevant items to publish here. We monitor mortgage rates, home prices, home-buyer programs, and other trends within the industry. Data sources include the National Association of Realtors, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, Census Bureau, Freddie Mac’s weekly summary of mortgage markets, and various news outlets from across the U.S.
